About
The Modern Ronin
Modern Ronin Reflections is a personal writing project by Dr. Jack Yeh.
The idea of the modern ronin comes from the image of a wandering samurai — independent, disciplined, and guided by an internal code rather than by external institutions.
Historically, a ronin was a masterless samurai. In the modern world, the idea carries a different meaning.
A modern ronin may be an engineer, a thinker, a creator, or anyone who chooses to pursue mastery, independent thinking, and intellectual freedom.
This site is a place where reflections on engineering, learning, technology, psychology, and life come together.
It is not only a collection of essays, but also a record of a long intellectual journey.
Dr. Jack Yeh is also the author of Modern Ronin: Reflections on Alignment, Growth, and Clarity, available on Amazon in Kindle, paperback, and hardcover editions. The book expands many of the themes explored on this site, including alignment, perception, inner clarity, psychological energy, growth, and the pursuit of a more authentic life.
Presented primarily in English with Traditional Chinese translations, the book is written for readers seeking not only knowledge, but deeper self-observation and transformation.
What This Site Is About
Modern Ronin Reflections is a collection of essays, thoughts, and observations.
The writings here explore themes such as:
- engineering thinking
- learning and mastery
- technology and society
- discipline, focus, and independent thinking
- reflections on life and long-term growth
Some essays are carefully structured.
Others are shorter notes, stories, or spontaneous reflections.
The goal is simple:
to think clearly, learn continuously, and document the journey.
About the Author
Dr. Jack Yeh (Chih-Chun Yeh) is an electrical engineer, author, and educator.
He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and has more than a decade of experience in:
- AC motor control
- power electronics
- motor drive systems
- control systems engineering
- engineering learning methodologies
His work focuses on bridging the gap between theoretical control systems and real-world engineering practice.
Over the years, he has worked on motor drive technologies, control algorithms, and engineering education systems that help engineers develop a deeper understanding of complex technologies.
Publications and Work
Dr. Yeh is the author of several books and technical works in the field of motor control and engineering learning.
His English-language book:
AC Motor Control Loop Design – Practical Modeling, Delay Compensation, and Simulation Techniques Using MATLAB/SIMULINK
(Published by Springer Nature)
He is also the author of:
Modern Ronin: Reflections on Alignment, Growth, and Clarity
(Amazon Kindle / Paperback / Hardcover Editions)
—a bilingual collection of contemplative reflections exploring alignment, perception, psychological energy, self-observation, growth, and the pursuit of a more authentic life in the modern world.
In addition, he has authored Chinese-language books, including:
- AC Motor Control and Simulation Techniques (Chinese edition)
- The Self-Training of IoT Experts (Chinese edition)
Across both engineering and philosophical writing, his work emphasizes clarity, systems thinking, sustainable growth, and the transformation of theory into lived understanding.
Engineering Community
Beyond technical research, Dr. Yeh is also deeply involved in engineering education and knowledge sharing.
He is the founder of MotorControl.School, an online educational platform dedicated to helping engineers understand complex motor control concepts in a practical and intuitive way.
In addition to the platform, he shares engineering knowledge through YouTube and Bilibili, where his technical content has attracted a community of more than 30,000 engineers and students.
Through these platforms, his work aims to make advanced motor control systems more accessible, intuitive, and practically useful for engineers around the world.
Areas of Interest
His primary areas of interest include:
- AC motor control
- power electronics
- digital control systems
- engineering learning systems
- simulation-driven engineering design
More broadly, he is interested in how engineering thinking, learning systems, and technological progress intersect.
Philosophy
The spirit of the modern ronin is independence.
It is the belief that:
- learning never stops
- mastery requires discipline
- meaningful work often happens outside conventional paths
Modern Ronin Reflections is a space for that journey.
