The Limits of Language and the Reality of Experience

The Limits of Language and the Reality of Experience

Language and words are, by nature, tools of highly compressed information.

They exist to make complex experiences communicable,

but in doing so, they inevitably lose a vast amount of detail.

For this reason, it is impossible to truly understand life through language alone.

Language can describe experience,

but it can never replace it.

When a person remains only at the level of reading and understanding,

it is easy to believe they have already “understood.”

But that is merely an understanding of description,

not an experience of life itself.

Great writers can use language to approach what is difficult to express,

yet even then,

language can never replace reality.

So—

Do not try to understand life through words.

Live it through experience.
