Knowledge: A Tool or a Prison?
English
The Indian philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti once offered a profound insight:
We rarely see things as they are. More often, we see them through the lens of our memories, knowledge, experiences, and psychological projections.
This reveals one of humanity's greatest cognitive blind spots.
We believe we are observing reality, when in fact we are often interpreting it through concepts accumulated over the years.
We are not living in reality.
We are living inside our own mental models.
This is also why experts can sometimes find it harder than beginners to make genuine breakthroughs.
As knowledge and experience accumulate, we gradually begin to believe that what is familiar must be correct, and that the methods we have mastered must be the best.
Knowledge, once a tool, quietly becomes a prison.
Instead of helping us understand reality, it begins filtering reality itself.
This reminds me of one of Elon Musk's observations:
Many intelligent people spend their lives optimizing something that should not have existed in the first place.
If we never question the problem itself, even a perfect solution may simply make the wrong system more efficient.
True creativity is therefore not merely the accumulation of knowledge.
It is the ability to temporarily set knowledge aside and observe reality with fresh eyes.
Knowledge is indispensable.
Experience is invaluable.
But without awareness, both can become the very prison that limits our imagination.
True wisdom is not simply knowing more.
It is knowing when to let go of what you think you know.
