Knowledge Exists to Be Used
Throughout my career, I have come to believe that the value of knowledge is never measured by how much we accumulate, but by how much we enable others to use it.
Many people treat knowledge as something to collect—like fine watches, works of art, or rare books. The collection itself becomes the objective.
I have never shared that view.
A fine watch may remain beautiful inside a safe, but it never fulfils its true purpose unless it is worn.
Knowledge is no different.
A book, a research paper, or an elegant theory may possess academic value while sitting quietly on a bookshelf. Yet its greatest value emerges only when engineers understand it, apply it, and use it to solve real-world problems.
That is why I believe:
Knowledge is not meant to be collected; it is meant to be used.
More importantly, it should be taught, shared, and passed on.
Only when knowledge continues to empower future generations of engineers does it fulfil the purpose for which it exists.
This philosophy is the reason I write books, develop educational platforms, publish open engineering resources, and dedicate myself to engineering education.
To me, knowledge does not truly live on a bookshelf.
It lives in the engineers who put it into practice.
知識存在的目的,是為了被使用。
我一直認為,知識的價值從來不在於它被累積了多少,而在於它是否真正被使用。
很多人把知識當成收藏品,像收藏名錶、藝術品或古董一樣,不斷累積、不斷擁有,卻很少真正讓它發揮作用。
但我一直不認同這樣的觀點。
一只手錶如果永遠鎖在保險箱裡,它仍然是一只好錶;然而,它作為時計的價值,卻從未真正被實現。
知識也是如此。
一本書、一篇論文、一個理論,如果只是安靜地躺在書架上,或者停留在引用數字裡,它當然仍然具有學術價值;但對我而言,它真正的價值,是當工程師能夠理解它、運用它,並利用它解決真實世界的問題。
因此,我始終相信:
知識不是用來收藏的,而是用來使用的。
更重要的是,它應該被教導、被分享、被傳承。
因為只有當知識能夠透過一代又一代工程師持續被理解與實踐,它才真正完成了自己存在的意義。
這也是我一直投入寫書、建立教育平台、開放工程資源,以及分享實務經驗的原因。
對我而言,知識真正的生命,不是在書架上,而是在每一位真正使用它的人身上。
