Theory Must Survive Reality: From IEEE to IET: My Understanding of Engineering

Recently, while learning more about the history and philosophy of both IEEE and IET, I came to an interesting realization.

Many engineers are familiar with both organizations, but few take the time to reflect on the different cultures and values they represent.

IEEE is one of the world's largest technical organizations, with more than half a million members worldwide. Its mission centers on technological innovation, knowledge sharing, international collaboration, and advancing technology for humanity.

IET, however, comes from a different tradition.

Its roots trace back to the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) in the United Kingdom. While it certainly values research and innovation, IET places a particularly strong emphasis on engineering professionalism, engineering practice, and the real-world impact of engineering.

Of course, IEEE is not solely about theory, and IET is not solely about practice. Both play essential roles in the engineering world.

Yet as I learned more about their respective cultures, I found myself deeply resonating with the spirit of IET.

Perhaps it is because, throughout my career, I have always been doing the same thing:

Turning theory into products, models into systems, and ideas into working engineering solutions.

Over the past few days, I found myself summarizing that belief into a single sentence:

Theory must survive reality.

Theory matters.

But only when it withstands the test of the real world does it truly become engineering.

Perhaps that is why I find the philosophy of IET so closely aligned with my own engineering journey.

IET 的前身是英國的 IEE(Institution of Electrical Engineers),它所承襲的,是英國工程師制度的傳統。

Theory must survive reality.
